I was invited for the elaboration of the cover of the new album of the Switzerland band SCHAMMASCH, an interesting process in which I had to reread Maldoror, it was a concept album (just like Hermaphrodite):
“The Songs of Maldoror: Old Ocean”, based on the part of the book where Maldoror reminisces the glory of the ocean and its superiority over humanity, the central elements of the work should form a kind of trinity (metaphorically speaking) of three elements:
1. Maldoror
2. The ocean
3. Humanity
The drawing (cover + back-cover) has the symmetry of an inverted central triangle and two on each side where the battle is released.
“I’ve often wondered which was the easier to acknowledge: the inherent depth of the ocean or the abyssic profundity of the human heart!
I was often standing aboard ship, my hand to my brow, while the moon balanced askew between the masts, I’ve astonished myself, disregarding all save the goal I pursued, striving to solve this complex enigma! Whose depth is the deeper? If half a life’s experience can tilt the scale toward one or the other, I may have permission to state that, despite the former’s depth, it couldn’t outplay the depth of the human heart within the context of this analogy.”
